Koryak Snow Sheep

Koryak Snow Sheep (Ovis nivicola koriakorum) - dwarf form of the Kamchatka snow sheep, found further North in the Koryak Mountains in mainland Siberia, above the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Very similar in coloration to the Kamchatka snow sheep, but about 30% smaller, the white muzzle and rump patch are not as pronounced. This compact sheep has shorter legs in proportion to the body than its southern cousin. Individuals found at the northern extremity of the Koryak Range, exhibit characteristics of the Chukotsk snow sheep, which has a heavier, lighter coat, of soft, wooly hair.

Area: Koryak Mountains, North of 60' N, and East of the Penzhina River, South of the 64' N.

Route

Via Moscow with Aeroflot. Flight from Moscow to Kamchatka is 8,5-hour non-stop flight. It is a daily flight.
Upon your arrival in Moscow or Petropavlovsk you will be met by our crew and assisted through customs.

From Petropavlovsk you go on commercial flight to Ossora in the North of Kamchatka peninsula and then by helicopter through Tilichiki to he hunting area.
Hunting season - August 1 to September 15

Climate

In August during daylight hours the temperature is 40 to 50 ^oF (15 to 25 ^oC) and during night from 25 to 40 ^oF (-5 to 10 ^oC). Late in the season rainy, snowy and windy weather can come.

Camp & accommodation

Tented camps with modern windproof tents. There are separate large tent for dining. The camps are located in mountain valleys at 2,500–3,000 feet (800-1,000 m). Electricity is supplied by generating sets.

Hunting

Hunting is done on foot. Two guides are provided for every hunter. For the most part a backpack hunt is traditional. Spike camps are a part of your hunt.  A long range shooting, 350-450 yards (300 – 400 meters) is normal.
