European bear at oat field and on bait.

Bear hunting on oats and on bait is very productive and interesting. The bear living in the European part of Russia is a relatively small subspecies of brown bears. Average weight: 160-170 kg, skin length from nose to tail tip: 150-180 cm. But some individuals sometimes reach 300 kg. Thus, in the Kirov region, on average, such a unique trophy is obtained once every two years, and bears weighing 220-250 kg are obtained annually.

Hunting periods:
- on oats - from August 20 to September 30

The activity of bears visiting oats depends on the harvest of berries (lingonberries, rowan, etc.) and hazelnuts. In years of poor harvest of wild-growing plants, oat fields are the main place for "fattening" of fat for bears. In such years, hunting is especially successful. The optimal period is a 7-day tour with 5-6 days of hunting.

-- on bait -- from April 1 to May 31

Bait is laid out in various places of the hunting grounds - animal carcasses (cows, horses, etc.), which are attached to tree trunks or in barrels. Then, throughout the spring, gamekeepers check the attendance of these places by the animal. As soon as it is established that the bear comes to the bait, the hunter is informed of this fact by phone. Then, within a few days, the hunter must arrive at the grounds and begin hunting from a blind.

Hunting method
hunting is carried out from a blind (ambush) in the evening and in the morning with an approach. In 80% of cases, bears are hunted in the evening.

Group size
from 1-3 hunters in the Kirov region, with a maximum of 3 hunters per hunting base.

Accommodation
hunting lodge with double rooms. Hunting lodges are kept clean, but do not have comfortable conditions (flush toilet, shower, etc.), but guests always have a sauna at their disposal.

At the request of hunters, accommodation can be arranged in the closest rest homes or tourist bases to the hunting grounds. But then you have to put up with long journeys and additional transportation costs.

Weapons
caliber 9.3x62, 338, 375. It is necessary to take into account that you have to shoot through vegetation (oats), which can significantly change the trajectory of the bullet. Therefore, it is very important to use large calibers and non-expansive bullets that disintegrate into small fractions at the first obstacle. What is required is heavy bullets with dense lead and jackets that maintain the integrity of the bullet and therefore penetration.
